Walter Buchanan of Shandon was M.P. for Glasgow from 1857 to 1865, and was a partner of Buchanan Hamilton and Company, East India merchants. He was born 30 January 1797, and died in 1883. He married twice, (1) Mary Hamilton by whom he had a daughter Ellen, (2) Christina Laura Smith by whom he had a daughter Christina Laura, after her mother.
The family is descended from the Buchanans of Auchinden of whom the first member was William Buchanan, a younger son of John Buchanan first of Leny, and are quite clearly Cadets of Leny, and connected to the Auchinden family via Walter Buchanan eighth of Auchinden via two second sons.
The Rev. Walter Buchanan D.D., born 1755, died 1832, minister at Canongate, Edinburgh, and Andrew Buchanan M.D., Professor of Physiology in the University of Glasgow, born 1798, died 1882, are members of this family.
The arms are recorded in Lyon Register Volume 6, Page 81, 12 October 1863.
