The Arms: 
Quarterly, first and fourth, Or, a lion rampant Sable armed and langued Gules within a double tressure flory counterflory of the second; second and third, Sable, a chevron between three bear‘s heads erased Argent muzzled Gules, in the centre of the quarters a crescent Argent, all within a bordure engrailed Gules.

The Crest: 
A dexter hand holding up a ducal cap within two laurel branches disposed orleways Proper.

The Motto: 
Above the crest: ‘Clario Hinc Honos’ ( Hence the brighter honour ) Below the shield: ‘Audaces Juvo’ ( I assist the bold. )

The bearer of these arms lived at 28 Chepstow Villas, London, and was born 14 April 1863. He was the only son of Walter Buchanan of Lower Bebington in County Palatine, Chester and his wife Mary Lewthwaite. He was a solicitor. He died on 21 October 1944 at Millom, England.

Walter Buchanan, born 22 October 1811 was the third son (second surviving) of Walter Buchanan of Southend, Argyll, and his wife Elizabeth Speir.

Walter of Southend, Argyll, was the fifth but second surviving son of Alexander Buchanan, Laird of Gartocharne, being the eldest son by his second wife Janet Duchlage of Drymen in Stirlingshire, widow of William Buchanan.

Alexander Buchanan of Gartocharne was Gt. Grandson and heir of Andrew Buchanan who purchased Gartocharne from Lord Napier, 1 October 1673.

James Buchanan of Drumpelier who recorded arms in the Public Register of All Arms in Scotland in his own name Quartered Arms for Buchanan and Leny with proper differences was descended from the second son of the aforesaid Andrew Buchanan of Gartocharne.

Andrew Buchanan of Gartocharne was son and heir of Alexander Buchanan in Gartocharne who was the second surviving son of Walter Buchanan of Glenny.

John Buchanan of Auchlessie and Arnprior who recorded arms 18 August 1810 as representative of the ancient families of Leny and Arnprior, was descended from the immediate elder brother of Walter of Glenny, second son of Alexander of Bochastel (Mochastel), who was the great grandson and heir of Walter of Bochastel. Walter had a charter of the lands of Petquhonorty in Perth from King James III dated 16 October 1463.

Walter of Bochastel was the third son of Andrew Buchanan of Leny descended from Buchanan of that Ilk, who recorded arms 10 December 1675.
