John Young Buchanan – Cadet of Drummakill

John Young Buchanan, FRSE FRS FCS (1844-1925)

John Young Buchanan was the second son of John Buchanan, fourth son of James Buchanan of Dowanhill.

The family are cadets of Drummakill via Finnick Drummond, Little Croy, Balfunnyng, and Ballachondachie.

James, who was first of Dowanhill, was the younger brother to George Buchanan of Finnick Drummond, the grandfather 3 times removed of Claude Askel Buchanan.

John Young Buchanan was scientist aboard the ‘Challenger’ expedition which came to New Zealand and circumnavigated the globe between 1872 and 1874.

He was elder brother to Thomas Ryburn Buchanan who was MP for East Aberdeenshire and Under Secretary for India.

The arms are recorded in Lyon Register Volume 8, page 2, 16 July 1868.
